R. William Donaghy, 25, machinist, died attempting to save Margaret McKinley, 23, from drowning, Townpoint, Maryland, August 31, 1919. Miss McKinley waded from a sandbar in the Elk River into water over her depth and went under the surface twice. A man swam to her, but after a brief struggle, he left her. Donaghy swam 20 feet from the sandbar to her and took hold of her arm, but he made no progress with her. They became separated, and Donaghy went under the surface. A rowboat then reached Miss McKinley, and she was taken into it. Donaghy was seen at the surface about eight feet from the boat, but he disappeared and was drowned. Miss McKinley was semiconscious but revived. 19965-1569
