Ralph A. Newman saved James F. Hoffer from a perilous fall, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, July 14, 1981. James, 17, lost his balance while working on a roof and began to fall 17 feet to the ground. Newman, 66, high school teacher, ran to where he expected James to land and positioned himself to catch James’s head. James fell onto Newman, who was knocked to the ground unconscious. Paralyzed from the shoulders down, Newman required extensive hospitalization and physical rehabilitation. James was observed at the hospital, and he recovered from soreness.
