Ralph E. Scholl, 18, student, saved Genevieve Carter, 14, from drowning, Pensacola, Florida, June 29, 1912. Genevieve fell from a launch two miles from the shore of Pensacola Bay, which was infested with sharks. Scholl dived from the launch without removing any clothing and swam 25 feet to her. He seized her and swam several strokes toward the launch but then stopped and supported Genevieve, waiting for the launch to return. There was much confusion on the launch, but it was turned 600 feet from Scholl and Genevieve and brought back to them, after they had been in the water about 10 minutes, and they were taken aboard. 14583-1324
