Ralph Franks, Jr., saved Justin S. Westmoreland from being struck by a train, Maitland, Florida, September 7, 1971. Justin, 2, wandered from his home to a railroad track and stood on the ties as a train approached at 45 m. p. h. Franks, 28, construction superintendent, noted the situation and ran to the track, where he proceeded toward Justin and the oncoming train by running on the ties. The engineer applied emergency brakes; but the train was within 150 feet of Justin when Franks reached him. Without pausing, Franks picked Justin up and moved from the track. The train narrowly missed them as it passed, stopping about 1,000 feet beyond them.
