Randolph A. Dominguez rescued Maybelline B. Gallegos and Crystal M. Castellanos from burning, Bakersfield, California, October 29, 1992. Ms. Gallegos, 26, and her daughter, Crystal, 1, were the occupants of a car that broke into flame after a highway accident. Dominguez, 37, heard the crash and went to the scene, where he learned that no one had exited the car. As the car’s doors were jammed shut, he made several attempts to break its front windows with a plastic crate, but he was unsuccessful. Dominguez then struck and broke the window of the passenger door with his fist. With some difficulty because of the smoke and heat, Dominguez repeatedly entered the car to his waist to remove Ms. Gallegos, then Crystal. Moments later, the car was engulfed by flames. Ms. Gallegos required hospitalization for treatment of burns, and Crystal also required hospital treatment for burns. Dominguez recovered from first-degree burns and cuts and bruises to his right hand.
