Randy H. Adderton died attempting to save Brittiani N. Adderton from burning, Goldsboro, North Carolina, April 3, 1996. Brittiani, 4, and her brother, Randy, 13, student, were inside their family’s one-story house after fire broke out in the living room. While their mother attempted to fight the flames, Randy helped his disabled grandmother from the bedroom area of the house to the front door. When Brittiani’s absence was noticed, he turned and ran back toward the bedrooms. The fire spread quickly, producing dense smoke and blistering heat. The grandmother and mother fled the house. Realizing that Randy and Brittiani remained inside, the mother attempted to rescue them but was thwarted by deteriorating conditions. Randy and Brittiani were found by firefighters in one of the bedrooms; both had died of smoke inhalation.
