Randy Michael Rushing attempted to save Frank L. Moore, Jr., from drowning, Carolina Beach, North Carolina, May 6, 1972. Moore, 21, college student, was caught by currents in the Atlantic Ocean and carried seaward. Rushing, 21, U.S. Marine corporal, entered the water and swam toward Moore, who was about 150 feet from shore. Rushing was seen about 120 feet from the beach but then disappeared from sight before he reached Moore, who later was saved by another, Marine corporal. When he was spotted floating face down in the water, Rushing was brought to shore by three young men and revived; but his rescue attempt left him permanently disabled.
