Ray D. Elliott, 20, student, died attempting to save Charles J. Pool, 16, schoolboy, from drowning, Marion, North Carolina, July 1, 1926. While wading in the Catawba River, Charles got into deep water 15 feet from the bank. From the opposite bank, Elliott waded eight feet and then swam 32 feet to him, reaching him just after a youth had left him to avoid being grasped by him. Charles grasped Elliott around the neck with both arms, and they were momentarily submerged. As they struggled, Charles climbed over Elliott’s shoulders, but Elliott pushed Charles several feet toward wadable water. Another swimmer arrived and took Charles to wadable water. Elliott, becoming separated from Charles, sank in deep water and was drowned. 26433-2268
