Ray E. Sutton, 31, fireman, attempted to save Cecil G. Keiser, 2, from being killed by a train, Hollinger, Nebraska, October 20, 1925. Cecil ran on a track ahead of a train approaching at a speed of 30 m.p.h. Sutton hurried along the running board from the cab to the pilot, thinking the speed of the train would decrease sufficiently to enable him to jump to the track, run ahead, and snatch the child from the track. Finding this impossible, he held to a coupler bar above the pilot, crouched with his feet resting on the slanting face of the pilot, grabbed Cecil with one hand, and lifted him from his feet when the train was moving at a speed of 8 to 10 m.p.h. A moment later Cecil slipped from his grasp and fell face downward and disappeared beneath the locomotive. The train ran 100 feet farther and stopped. Cecil was uninjured except for scratches. 26020-2246
