Ray M. Taylor, 26, well digger, attempted to save Francis M. McCune, 27, well digger, from suffocation, Summit, South Dakota, November 10, 1908. Taylor descended to the bottom of a well, 68 feet deep and two feet in diameter, and stood on a cross pin at the end of a cable, with a strap fastened under his arms, to help McCune, who was in convulsions. After a minute he was affected by gas and was hoisted, but he recovered on the way up. He was lowered again but was overcome almost as soon as he reached the bottom, and he was again hoisted out. He recovered. McCune died in the well. 3133-446
