Raymond C. Comerford, 32, athletic director, died attempting to save Robert G. Smith from drowning, Ocean Bluff, Massachusetts, August 25, 1931. While wading in rough surf in the Atlantic Ocean, Robert, 12, was carried by strong undertow through breakers six feet high to a point 75 feet from shore. He called for help. Comerford’s position then was not known, but later he was observed in water up to his mouth between the waves trying to push Robert toward shore. A man who was a good swimmer waded and swam to the two. When he arrived, they were separated, and Comerford was exhausted and maintaining himself with difficulty close to Robert. The man took hold of Robert and swam to shallow water close to shore. Comerford called for help, was carried farther from the shore, and was drowned. 31550-2629
