Raymond E. Bostian, 12, schoolboy, saved Timothy D. Williamson, 2, from being struck by a train, China Grove, North Carolina, April 18, 1967. Timothy was sitting on a railroad track on which a train was approaching. Raymond saw Timothy on the track as the train rounded a bend a quarter-mile away. The engineer applied braking. As Raymond ran about 250 feet alongside the sloping gravel ballast, Timothy rose to his feet but remained between the rails. When he reached a point opposite Timothy, Raymond turned and ascended the gravel slope. He ran into the path of the train when it was about 250 feet away and approaching at approximately 48 m.p.h. Raymond stooped and lifted Timothy from the track. Carrying Timothy, he continued across the track and out of the path of the train, which passed without stopping.
