Raymond F. McCormick, Sr., 38, subway maintenance man, saved Ronald R. Frazer, 12, and died saving Arthur D. Scott, 9, from drowning, North Woodmere, New York, July 13, 1947. While playing in Hook Creek, Ronald and Arthur, neither of whom could swim, got into deep water and were briefly submerged. An older boy with an inflated tire tube around him reached them, and they tried but could not hold to the tube. McCormick waded five feet from the bank and then swam 16 feet to Ronald, who threshed in water 12 feet deep. Towing Ronald, he swam six feet to the tube, to which Ronald held. McCormick swam pushing it six feet and thrust it five feet farther. Ronald and the older boy paddled with it to wadable water, and McCormick swam back six feet to Arthur. McCormick swam towing him 11 feet and thrust him five feet farther to wadable water and then suddenly sank. His body was recovered 50 minutes later. 41102-3532
