Raymond J. Anthony died attempting to save Harvey R. Vernon from suffocation, Piedmont, Alabama, November 15, 1971. Vernon, 32, was discovered unconscious inside a silo containing ensilage which caused an absence of oxygen in the structure. Anthony, 47 machinery maintenance man, said he would remove Vernon. Jumping into the silo through a three-foot opening in its top, Anthony took hold of Vernon but then lost consciousness and collapsed on top of him. A rescue squad was summoned; and Vernon and Anthony were removed from the silo. Both were pronounced dead.
