Raymond Martin, 52, handyman, saved Louis P. Robare, 67, real estate broker, from drowning, Hawkeye, New York, October 31, 1967. While on the bank of a lake with Martin, Robare suffered a stroke which paralyzed his left side. He fell into the cold water. Martin, who could not swim and had a serious heart condition, went to the aid of Robare, who was four feet from the bank in wadable water. Martin dragged Robare, who outweighed him by 40 pounds, three feet to a dock and tried in vain to lift him onto it. He then sat down with his back against the dock and held Robare so that his head was above the water, which was two and a half feet deep. Martin called for help frequently as, for about five hours, he sat in the cold water with Robare. Others arrived and removed both men from the lake. Robare was hospitalized. Martin suffered only minor ill effects.
