Raymond Radovan Rikic helped to rescue Laird D. Weiler from burning, Stoney Creek, Ontario, October 9, 1986. Following a highway accident, Weiler, 30, was trapped inside a station wagon, which was upside down. Fire erupted on the engine of the car and spread to its interior. Dispatched to the scene, Rikic, 26, police officer, joined two men who had attempted, unsuccessfully, to extinguish the flames and remove Weiler. The three men worked to free Weiler, and as flames increased, they pulled him through the window of the passenger door and carried him to safety. Shortly, the car was engulfed in flames, and an explosion occurred. Weiler required extensive hospitalization for his severe burns, from which he recovered, and other injuries. Rikic was treated at a hospital for second-degree burns to his right hand, and he recovered.
