Rene Desrosiers rescued Yves N. Pineault from burning, Ste.-Jeanne-d’Arc, Quebec, December 20, 1993. Pineault, 27, was inside his home after fire erupted in the kitchen. Arriving to visit, Desrosiers, 40, farmer, drove upon the scene and discovered the fire. He attempted to enter the house through the kitchen door but was repelled by dense, black smoke. He then went to the front of the house, broke out a living room window, and climbed through it. Smoke in the living room precluded visibility as Desrosiers made repeated searches for Pineault, returning frequently to the window for air. After hearing Pineault moan, Desrosiers crawled across the room and located him on the floor. He dragged Pineault to the window and maneuvered him through it to others who had arrived. Pineault was hospitalized for serious burns and died six days later. Desrosiers required treatment for smoke inhalation and cuts, and he recovered.
