Reuben P. Swortley, 23, molder, saved George A. Phillips, 13, from drowning, Norristown, Pennsylvania, February 8, 1910. Swortley, assisted by his father, shoved a boat out over the ice on the Schuylkill River until they and the boat broke through 25 feet from George, who had broken through the ice 200 feet from shore in 15 feet of water. After breaking the ice ahead of him six feet, Swortley let go of the boat, swam ahead, breaking the ice with his arms, and was just about to grab George when George sank. Swortley dived at once and brought him to the surface. The bow of the beat was pushed close to them, and the boy was taken ashore in the boat. 4846-437
