Richard Carlos Barrera helped to save Jacob LaCrue from drowning, Pueblo, Colorado, April 20, 1985. When Jacob, 13, a non-swimmer, struggled in the deep water of Runyon Lake, Richard, 14, student, jumped into the lake after him. He swam to Jacob and supported him as they were carried out by the swift current of a nearby stream that emptied into the lake. Jacob lost consciousness and submerged; Richard submerged repeatedly to support him from below. Two men, one with an inner tube, then swam out to them and returned them to the bank. Richard and Jacob both required hospital treatment for effects of the ordeal. 60791-6956
