Richard D. Zirbes saved an indeterminate number of persons from being shot, Skokie, Illinois, February 6, 1985. A 32-year-old man armed with a gun entered the offices of the company where he was employed and shot his foreman. He then went to an adjacent office and shot another co-worker. At least 10 more employees were in the immediate vicinity, including Zirbes, 33, metallurgist, who was seated in the second office. Zirbes rose and ran after the assailant, tackling him. A struggle for the gun ensued. The assailant broke free from Zirbes’ grasp, took aim, and shot Zirbes in the face. The assailant then left the area but was arrested shortly by police. The foreman, co-worker, and Zirbes were seriously injured, Zirbes suffering the loss of an eye. 60228-6969
