Richard Douglas Wyatt saved Carolyn J. Baschal from suffocation, Jackson, Michigan, March 21, 1973. When fire broke out in a second-floor room of a frame dwelling, Carolyn, 12, was in the adjoining bedroom, which began filling with smoke. She attempted to open a window but lost consciousness. Wyatt, 43, tree trimmer, was attracted and, from a ladder by which the window had been broken, climbed into the bedroom. He could see nothing in the smoke-filled room but, by probing in the darkness, he located Carolyn. Coughing and gasping for breath, Wyatt took Carolyn to the window and thrust her through the opening to others outside. They carried Carolyn down the ladder; and Wyatt followed. Carolyn and Wyatt were hospitalized. Both recovered fully.
