Richard Duvall saved James W. Rhodes from burning, Hempstead, New York, April 5, 1982. Following a highway accident, Rhodes, 34, lay unconscious on the floorboard of his car, the engine compartment of which was aflame. As flames began to enter the car through its broken windshield, Duvall, 52, salesman, entered the car, but was forced out by heat. Entering again, almost completely, Duvall freed Rhodes and pulled him from the car. He lay atop Rhodes to protect him when the car was suddenly engulfed in flames, then dragged Rhodes a safe distance away. Rhodes recovered from his injuries.
