Richard E. Samples, Jr., saved Margaret L. Cozart from burning, Hephzibah, Georgia, October 1, 1991. Mrs. Cozart, 72, was the passenger in a pickup truck that, pulling a travel trailer, left the highway and came to rest turned partially onto its driver’s side. Gasoline from the truck’s two fuel tanks flowed onto the ground and ignited, and flames spread to the trailer, threatening its butane tanks. The passenger of another vehicle in the vicinity, Samples, 20, entertainer, ran to the truck and crawled into the narrow space between the driver’s door and the ground. After breaking out the window of the driver’s door, he maneuvered part way into the cab, where he seized Mrs. Cozart and pulled her out. Both the truck and pickup were destroyed by the flames. Mrs. Cozart was taken to the hospital for treatment, and she recovered. Samples, whose jacket was damaged by the fire, sustained bruises, but he too recovered.
