Richard G. Albee rescued Brent L. McElwain from burning, Redlands, California, July 24, 1981. When his car collided with a tractor-trailer in a highway accident, McElwain, 31 was pinned unconscious behind the steering wheel as the front of the car and the truck cab burst into flames. With the wrecked car’s hood fully involved and with flames flashing through the interior, Albee, 26, a firefighter who was off duty, pulled open the driver’s door, removed McElwain, and dragged him to safety. McElwain was hospitalized; he recovered from third-degree burns over 60 percent of his body.
