Richard J. Norris, 13, schoolboy, saved Bobby Joe Sweeney, 11, from drowning, Hamilton, Ohio, March 13, 1965. Bobby Joe, who could not swim, became frightened while on a raft 30 feet from the nearest bank of a gravel pit and jumped into the water, which was 20 feet deep. He was submerged briefly and then flailed wildly in an effort to stay afloat. Richard entered the near freezing water but found his clothing too much of an impediment. He immediately returned to the bank, undressed to his undershorts, and then reentered the water. Richard swam to Bobby Joe, who meanwhile had been submerged briefly again. Bobby Joe was flailing as Richard approached from behind and obtained a hold on him. Richard towed Bobby Joe 30 feet to wadable water and then aided him to the bank.
