Richard Jon Starkey died attempting to help save Brandon W. McDaniel and Carl J. Parker, Jr., from drowning, Uhrichsville, Ohio, July 8, 1987. Brandon, 15, and Carl, 14, were struggling in turbulent water at the base of a weir in Big Stillwater Creek. Starkey, 25, auto parts salesman who was working nearby, ran to the scene. He waded into the creek and began to swim toward Brandon and Carl, as did his uncle, who had arrived from his nearby home. Starkey and his uncle swam to within 10 feet of Brandon before they submerged in the rough water. They drowned, as did Carl. Brandon was rescued by others.
