Richard R. Taff died attempting to help save Josephine M. Brown from drowning, Sunrise Beach, Missouri, July 29, 1984. Josephine, 12, floated unconscious in 13-foot-deep water at the end of a dock in Lake of the Ozarks. Taff, 20, carpet layer, was boating in the lake when he saw Josephine. He stopped his boat, dived into the lake, and swam about 150 feet to the dock, where he submerged. Josephine was pulled from the water by others and was revived; she recovered. When it was noticed that he was missing, Taff was pulled from the water but, despite efforts to revive him, died.
