Richard W. Zoda saved Gary K. Douglas from burning, Marion, Indiana, May 26, 1971. A tractor-trailer driven by Douglas, 30, truckdriver, was involved in an accident with a truck driven by Zoda, 27, highway maintenance worker. Zoda heard Douglas shout that he could not open the door of the cab, where fire had broken out at the right side following the rupture of one of the rig’s fuel tanks. Running to the driver’s side of the cab, Zoda with difficulty opened the jammed door. He reached inside to within two feet of the nearest flames and took hold of Douglas. Zoda drew Douglas out of the cab and aided him away from it. About one minute later, the cab was filled with flames.
