Riley Christmas, Sr., helped to save George G. Mitchell from suffocation, Cambridge, Maryland, September 17, 1985. Mitchell, 38, collapsed in an oxygen-deficient hold of a barge on which he was working. Despite being informed of the danger, Christmas, 46, crane operator, and another man descended into the hold, grasped Mitchell, and dragged him to a point below the hold’s opening. Christmas and the other man then collapsed. Co-workers of the men forced fresh air into the hold, then worked together to remove them. Christmas, Mitchell, and the other man were taken to the hospital for treatment, and they recovered. 60803-7035
