Robert A. Nahrgang saved Robert F., John A., and Sandra F. Cooper from suffocation, Kitchener, Ontario, May 6, 1972. At night fire broke out in the kitchen of a two-story dwelling in which the five Cooper children were asleep in upstairs bedrooms. Nahrgang, 34, punch press operator, was attracted and entered the Cooper dwelling. Flames were spreading rapidly and smoke was increasing as he ran to the second floor. Nahrgang found Robert, 3, in the hall and took him to the bottom of the stairs before returning for other children. He removed John, 9, from one bedroom and Sandra, 4, from another. By then flames had reached the second floor. Carrying John and Sandra, Nahrgang descended the stairs and then herded Robert ahead of him as he emerged from the dwelling. Nahrgang attempted to return to the second floor, but conditions prevented him from doing so. Firemen arrived and removed the bodies of the other two Cooper children.
