Robert Backus, 29, stationary engineer, attempted to save William B. Jones, 30, foreman, from suffocation, Youngstown, Ohio, April 29, 1909. Backus, after assisting in drawing a failed rescuer from a 10-foot-deep gasometer pit which had filled with carbon monoxide, descended into the gas himself with a handkerchief tied over his nose and mouth and a rope about his waist. He fastened a rope to Jones, before being overcome. Both were drawn up. Backus recovered. Jones was dead. 3677-304
