Robert Byron Simpson saved Stella M. Zakoske from drowning, Glen Cove, New York, August 1, 1935. While Stella, 13, was swimming in Dosoris Creek, she lost self control in water eight feet deep 20 feet from the bank, was momentarily submerged, and threshed wildly. From wadable water Robert, 12, schoolboy, swam 15 feet to her and took hold of her. She clasped her arms around his neck and climbed upon his back. In a struggle both were momentarily submerged. They were again submerged, and with Stella holding him around the neck, Robert swam under the surface for 12 feet to wadable water.
