Robert C. Baur, 24, cement worker, attempted to save Edward L. Barnes, 41, from drowning, Richmond, Virginia, January 8, 1908. During a flood, Barnes fell from a boat into the James River and was carried over a dam, where the water dropped 2.5 feet, and into some shrubbery 30 feet beyond. Baur, in a boat, was let down by a rope to Barnes, from an island 100 feet above the dam. He got Barnes into the boat, but, the rope breaking, it capsized. Barnes was drowned. Baur reached an island and was later rescued. 2367-266
