Robert C. Covieo died attempting to save Eleanor E. Gatza from drowning, Bay City, Michigan, August 14, 1939. At night Miss Gatza, 20, dropped from a bridge into the Saginaw River 175 feet from the bank, where the water was 24 feet deep. Covieo, 19, salesman, who had been with her and had run 500 feet and was winded, reached the bridge and was told that Miss Gatza was in the water 30 feet from the bridge. Removing most of his clothing, Covieo dropped from the bridge 20 feet into the water. He was not observed after that. Fifteen minutes later his body was recovered at a point 30 feet from the bridge, and Miss Gatza was found 15 feet nearer it. Neither could be revived. 38882-3247
