Robert C. Richardson died attempting to save John H. Hurt from suffocation, Summit, Arkansas, September 19, 1922. Hurt, 35, laborer, entered a well 28 feet deep, into which a bucket of burning shingles had been lowered in an unsuccessful attempt to set off a charge of dynamite. He was at once overcome by gas. Richardson, 60, farmer, told Hurt’s wife to run for help, saying he would go down and tie the rope to Hurt. Richardson descended holding to the rope and tied it around Hurt. He was then overcome before help arrived. Hurt was drawn up about 20 minutes after he was overcome and was later revived. When Richardson was removed 90 minutes later, he could not be revived. 22805-1787
