Robert D. DeRusso saved an unknown man from being struck by a train, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, February 4, 1983. A man astride his bicycle was standing between the rails of a track waiting for a train on an adjacent track to pass. Unbeknownst to him, a train was approaching at 15 m.p.h. on the track on which he stood. The conductor of that train, DeRusso, 36, realized the man would be hit. DeRusso jumped from the locomotive, outran the train, which was slowing, and with a flying tackle, removed the man from the track just before the front of the train passed them. Neither man was badly injured.
