Robert Dale Wittich died assisting in an attempt to save Harold D. Holmes from suffocation, Holyrood, Kansas, August 16, 1973. When a workman was overcome in a storage tank that had contained crude oil, Holmes, 54, aided in removing the man but then was overcome before he could leave the tank. Wittich, 20, roustabout, followed another man down a ladder into the tank in an attempt to aid Holmes; and a third man also entered the tank. Wittich and the others were overcome. All four men died.

Robert Dale Wittich was born on Nov. 1, 1952, in Guthrie, Okla. He graduated from high school and attended college in Edmond, Okla..
He was a summer roustabout on Cities Service Oil Company leases around Great Bend, Kan., at the time of his death on Aug. 16, 1973.
