Robert Dowling, 38, machinist, saved Mahlon R. Potts, 28, pumpman, and attempted to save Paul Szyslak, 33, and Andrew Chlap, 35, laborers, from suffocation, Elizabeth, New Jersey, December 9, 1905. Dowling entered a tar still in which the three men were unconscious from gas and fastened a rope to Potts, who was drawn up. Dowling climbed out but a minute later descended for the other men and was overcome. All were subsequently rescued with a long iron hook. Potts and Dowling recovered, but the other two died. 3227-295
