Robert E. French, 16, schoolboy, saved Wayne C. Fuqua, 13, schoolboy, from drowning, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, May 21, 1952. A rowboat in which Wayne was riding capsized in deep water 30 feet from the bank of a pond, and he was submerged briefly. The boat was thrust beyond his reach. Two other occupants of the boat reached the bank safely. Robert saw Wayne as the latter rose floundering and, removing only his shoes, dived from the bank and swam to him. Wayne struggled with Robert, seizing him around the neck with both hands, and pulled him below the surface. Robert, who had swallowed water, pushed violently against Wayne’s body with his knees and broke his hold. They rose to the surface five feet apart. Wayne momentarily remained afloat and again sank, losing consciousness. Submerging, Robert swam to Wayne and brought him to the surface. Robert then towed Wayne 25 feet to wadable water and carried him to the bank. Wayne was revived. Robert was tired. 3814-42608
