Robert E. Grant Foreman, 10, schoolboy, saved Norman B. Hinckley, 12, schoolboy, from drowning, Balboa, California, September 6, 1918. Norman attempted to swim from a pier in deep water in Balboa Bay 84 feet from shore but immediately became distressed and got eight feet from the pier. Robert dived from the pier and swam to Norman, who grasped him. They were submerged, and Robert freed himself under water and grasped Norman’s bathing suit at the back of the neck. He then attempted to swim toward shore but could make no progress. He supported Norman until a man reached them in a rowboat, and both were helped into the boat. 19182-1644
