Robert E. Orem died after helping to save Kenneth G. Swartley from drowning, North Beach, New Jersey, September 10, 1977. While swimming in the Atlantic Ocean, Swartley, 58, called for help when he found himself unable to move shoreward because of strong currents in the rough water. Orem, 58, realtor, and two other men swam to Swartley’s position, about 150 feet from shore; and all four men formed a chain but could make no progress toward the beach. The other two men swain separately to shore, leaving Orem and Swartley to themselves. One of the men then returned and assisted Swartley toward the beach. Others met them and, after aiding Swartley to safety, went to Orem, who was then barely conscious. While being taken to the beach Orem collapsed.
