Robert E. Siegel helped to rescue Joseph W. Baur from assault, Santa Cruz, California, May 20, 1988. Baur, 34, was assaulted on a city street by a man who struck him with a machete. Siegel, 38, mail sorter, who was nearby., ran to the scene as the assailant prepared to strike Baur with the machete again. Siegel and another man confronted the assailant, Siegel grasping the blade of the machete with both hands. They struggled with the assailant, forcing him against a parked car. Another man disarmed the assailant. Siegel was treated at a hospital for cuts on the fingers of both hands, and he recovered. Baur also required hospital treatment for injuries.
