Robert Earl Moore, Sr., died helping to save an indeterminate number of persons from a possible explosion, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, March 20, 1980. Moore, 46, equipment mechanic, was among about eight men working in a steam boiler plant. A condition arose that created the threat of a boiler explosion. Amidst worsening conditions, Moore followed another man to a catwalk above a boiler to close a steam-pipe valve. The pipe ruptured, filling the area with steam. The other man escaped. Moore later was found and removed, but he died of burns sustained from the steam. 57897-6566
