Robert G. Brown, Sr., died after saving Donald E. and Jennifer Fulton from drowning, Melbourne Beach, Florida, October 28, 1996. While swimming in the Atlantic Ocean, Fulton, 52, and his wife, 49, experienced difficulty as they attempted to return to shore against the current. Struggling to maintain their position in barely wadable water atop a sand bar, they shouted for help. At a swimming pool near the scene, Brown, 64, semi-retired funeral director, was alerted to the couple’s plight. He immediately responded to the beach with a life ring from the pool, then entered the ocean and waded and swam toward the Fultons. He threw the ring to the Fultons, who grasped and held to it as they swam to shore alongside Brown, who coached and encouraged them. Brown returned to the pool area but within minutes collapsed and died of cardiac arrest.
