Robert H. D. Stephenson, Sr., 26, laborer, died attempting to save John P. Duffy, 15, schoolboy, from drowning, Brooklyn, New York, August 4,1911. John, who could not swim, was struggling in water 20 feet deep in Gowanus Bay, 35 feet from the bank. Stephenson, although hot and tired, waded toward him. When 10 feet from where John had last been seen, Stephenson swam toward John but sank almost immediately and did not re-appear. When the bodies were recovered, it was found that Stephenson had a large bruise on the right side of his forehead. 7181-615
