Robert H. Nordin, 35, electric company trouble-shooter, died attempting to save Sylvia L. Monk, 13, from drowning, Pembroke, Massachusetts, December 27, 1954. While skating on a pond, Sylvia broke through the ice into deep water 350 feet from the bank and was immersed in a hole four feet in diameter. Apprised of Sylvia’s plight by her mother, Nordin ran 425 feet to the bank. He walked 50 feet on the ice and then crawled to within 35 feet of Sylvia. Suddenly the ice gave way beneath Nordin, and he fell into the water and was submerged briefly in a hole five feet long and three feet wide. He could make no further progress toward Sylvia but called to her, urging her to conserve her strength. Within a minute after he had broken through, Nordin sank and did not reappear. From another bank three youths used sticks in pushing a rowboat to Sylvia. The youths aided Sylvia into the boat and paddled to the bank. Nordin was brought to the surface by firemen a half an hour later but could not be revived. Sylvia, who suffered from shock and exposure, recovered. 43340-4000
