Robert J. Seybold, Jr., rescued Jon H. Van Derslice from burning, New Cumberland, Pennsylvania, March 11, 1997. Van Derslice, 42, was in his fourth-floor apartment after fire broke out in the living room and filled the apartment with dense smoke. Dispatched in his capacity as part-time emergency medical technician, Seybold, 39, mechanic, responded to the scene, arriving before firefighters, and learned that someone was possibly trapped in the building. Seybold went to the fourth floor and crawled into the burning apartment. He became disoriented while conducting a search in the dense smoke and retreated to the hall. Re-entering, Seybold resumed his search. He heard Van Derslice and crawled to where he lay on the floor of the living room. Seybold grasped Van Derslice, who was badly burned and part of whose clothing was aflame, and dragged him from the apartment, then cut off his burning attire. Van Derslice was hospitalized for treatment of his burns but died three days later. Seybold required hospital treatment for smoke inhalation.
