Robert L. Flynn died attempting to save John A. Viti from drowning, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, May 14, 1925. While working on a bridge over the Delaware River, Viti, 25, bridgeman, was struck by a piece of steel and fell 135 feet into the river. He was injured and drifted in a strong current. Flynn, 40, bridgeman, with his clothes on, jumped from a barge under the bridge and swam toward Viti, but Viti sank before Flynn could get to him. Flynn continued to the point where Viti sank, having swum 60 feet, and trod water a moment as though waiting for Viti to come up. He then swam and drifted 80 feet farther toward a tug, which was approaching him. When the tug was 60 feet from him, he sank. Both men were drowned. 25228-1995
