Robert Lee Carter died after attempting to save Fernando Vong from drowning, Milton, Delaware, May 10, 1988. Fernando, 7, was fishing in the Broadkill River when he slipped and was carried away by the current. He floundered and called for help. On a family outing nearby, Carter, 27, roofer, immediately jumped from a bridge into the river and swam to Fernando. A struggle ensued, during which both Fernando and Carter submerged. Fernando was recovered from the river by arriving rescue personnel, but he could not be revived.
