Robert Lofton Rice died attempting to save Claude J. King from drowning, Wentzville, Missouri, June 17, 1973. When King, 28, rode a horse into a deep hole in a creek, the animal threw him. King, who could not swim, began flailing in the deep water. Rice, 31, machine repairman, entered the water fully clothed, including boots, and swam to King, who grabbed him around the neck. Both men submerged. First King was seen at the surface after which Rice also was seen before again going under. Both men drowned.
